Time To Let The Depression Sink In
I wasn't expecting the Sharks to be any good this year. I was very pleasantly surprised when it looked as though they were going to have a playoff spot. In fact, I was getting ready to fill out my bracket with them winning the Stanley Cup.
Their falloff was heartbreaking.
Within a matter of weeks the team went from red hot to ice cold. They lost their spot in the playoffs and fought to get it back. Some battles are lost. The Sharks lost their battle on April 13th.
What's interesting is that they lost their battle with a win against the Predators. At least they took Nashville down with them. It was with the Kings' victory that both teams were officially eliminated for playoff contention.
This is disappointing. I'm not quite at the point where I'd call myself depressed, but I'm certainly let down when I look at their early and mid-season performance as compared with the last few weeks. They simply couldn't finish the job.
Macklin Celebrini did his job all season, scoring over 100 points in just his sophomore year. Will Smith did his job, scoring over 55 points. They were the two bright spots of the team in 2025-2026, and they will continue to wreak havoc on the ice next season. The chemistry between the two of them is incredible, and hopefully the young duo will lead San Jose to a playoff berth in 2026-2027.
Though this season did not go the way I wanted, the team made great strides. Young goaltender Yaroslav Askarov was solid for much of the season. If he can keep his first half numbers throughout an entire season, the team will find more success.
Defense is the weakest part of the Sharks' game. They have a young star in the making in Luca Cagnoni, who will hopefully make an impact for the team next year. There are a lot of things to look forward to, and I would not be surprised in the least to see the team make a playoff run next season.
Though defeated this year, we're looking forward to success in the next.
They almost doubled their win total compared to last season, so they're definitely headed in the right direction. There were just too many extended losing streaks (including at the end) to overcome. I feel like they'll continue to grow and make the playoffs next season. Hopefully their young stars continue to develop and the team as a whole gels. Go Sharks!
